AVnu Alliance Celebrates IEEE Publication of Audio Video Bridging (AVB) Standards

IEEE 802.1AS, 1722 and 1733 standards published

Beaverton, Ore., April 7, 2011 – The IEEE has published three additional Audio Video Bridging (AVB) standards. The newly ratified IEEE 802.1AS, 1722 and 1733 standards join the already approved 802.1Qat and 802.1Qav standards and will redefine how IEEE 802-based A/V networks are built.

“The core AVB standards are now complete!” states Michael Johas Teener, Audio Video Bridging Task Group chair. “Now it is possible to build a standards based network with deterministic delays and precise synchronization that supports professional quality A/V streams while simultaneously carrying existing ‘best effort’ traffic.”

“We commend the IEEE 802.1 AVB Task Group for this considerable achievement. For the ecosystem of silicon and device makers, they now have ratified, open standards that deliver these foundations for building high-quality audio/video networks via AVB,” states Rick Kreifeldt, chairman and president of AVnu Alliance.  “These ratifications will allow us to accelerate the AVnu compliance and interoperability program for commercial adoption of AVB throughout the professional, automotive, and consumer markets.”

Kevin Stanton, AVnu Alliance Technical Work Group chair states, “Publication of the 802.1AS standard, along with support for it in 802.11v, is a huge accomplishment.  802.1AS enables time to be automatically synchronized between devices to within a millionth of a second for Ethernet, and 802.11v enables 802.1AS to be extended to Wireless LAN.”

“With the ratification of IEEE 1722, the most common raw and compressed audio and video formats are now fully standardized for use across AVB networks. We’re already seeing great progress by many professional and automotive companies in introducing products leveraging the support of IEEE 1722 built into many silicon – including programmable – offerings,”  continues Robert Boatright, IEEE 1722 Chair.

Suman Sharma, chair of IEEE 1733 adds, “The newly ratified IEEE 1733 standard brings the benefits of AVB’s synchronization and QoS to the IETF RTP suite of protocols, which have become the standard for streaming real-time media over IP networks.”
